TRENDnet TEW-424UB driver for Windows 7 (and Vista)

I thought that maybe this information will be useful for other people using TRENDnet TEW-424UB wireless USB adapter or any other SiS 163u device.

Well, thing is that TRENDnet states that this device (versions below 3.x) is not compatible with anything above Windows XP. What about Vista or Windows 7? Buy a new WLAN adapter? No, that’s definitely not the case.

This device uses SiS 163u chipset, and even though TRENDnet says otherwise, SiS has a driver for Vista (both 32 and 64 bit) and it works well with Windows 7 as well. So, if you need it – go and get it here: http://w3.sis.com/download/,  then accept the agreement, in the next screen select Vista Basic/Premium (even for Windows 7) from the first selection box, then Network Driver from the second, and SiS163U WLAN controller from the third. The next screen after that is self-explanatory. Get the driver and you’re good to go.

I hope this helps :)

    Hi Jamie,

it is good news that there’s some driver. Maybe you could tell which system you’re using: Win7 (x86 or x68) or Vista. Another thing: was the adapter auto detected or you have manually specified some driver from the list of available drivers. It is also important to know which revision of the adapter you’re using – if it is V3 or above then there shouldn’t be any problems. Problems arise when V2 and below is being used.

    Hi

I think the problem I have is more to do with the ISP, talk talk. A quick google finds many users complaining of trendnet not working with Talk Talk routers.

The adapter is detected sometimes, othertimes its not. As for the first time trying in into Windows, I can’t remember.

Operating system is Windows 7, 32 bit.

As i speak my connection is working, but its very rarely.

As for which version, I’m not sure, where do I find the version ? I’ve checked the usual properties page with no luck

Hi, I have quite a few problems after installing the driver from the link you provided above. My OS is windows 7 and I have a tew424ub network adapter; hence cpu does not detect the network adapter at first. It started working for a little bit after I installed the driver you recommended. But at the sametime, My computer won’t shutt down/reboot/or sleep (it attempts to shut down but it doesn’t for like 15 mins). In addition, the internet connection was choppy at best, it connects and disconnects, after it disconnects the cpu won’t detect the adapter anymore…
Everything is OK again after I uninstall the SiS driver, but then I no longer have interest connection.

    Please help.

Victor, from what you’ve described, it seems you have a different version of adapter. Take a closer look at your wireless adapter and check the version. If it is V3, then this driver is not suitable for you.

Hi there, I have a version 2 adapter and currently using Windows 7 64bit home premium OS. I installed the driver for vista as instructed, it worked for a little while then suddenly loses connection and can longer detect the adapter.. when I reboot it remains in the “shutting down” screen forever. I uninstalled the vista driver, things are fine again but my cpu won’t detect the adapter…

    Any idea?

I thought buying a new computer its suppose make life easier…

Did you get the 64-bit version drivers? If, for instance, you’ve got 32-bit, that might be the cause of the problem.

Hi, after I downloaded the driver. I have the following subfolders/files:
    -Vista
    -Vista64
    -HowToInstallDriver
    -Q&A
    -Release
    -Vista_Setup
    -Vista_Uninstall
Am I suppose to go into Vista64>USB, and install DPInst ??

I don’t know much about computer, your help is appreciated.

    Victor.

Well, you should right click on sis163u.inf and choose Install in Vista64 -> USB folder. Then go to Device Manager and delete the existing entry for the trendnet device. Plug out the device from USB port and plug it back. It should be detected and installed properly.

  19. Victor said,

sis163u.inf is a txt file… I can only read the text in the file… In the Vista64>USB folder, the only driver I see is the DPInst, is that the driver I should install on my PC.? Then follow the steps you have outlined above.

“Then go to Device Manager and delete the existing entry for the trendnet device. Plug out the device from USB port and plug it back. It should be detected and installed properly.”

There is also a Vista_Setup driver, which one should I download?
    1) Vista_Setup driver , or
    2) (Vista64>USB folder) DPInst ?

    Thanks again.

I think I am starting to understand what you mean. But it won’t let me install sis163u.inf. I get an error message “The ING file you selected does not support this method of installation”

I have two OS, windows 7 32bit and 64bit. They both give me the same error message. Anyway to get around this?

Having same problem as, Victor. Windows 7 on x86 system. When I run the Vista Setup.exe, nothing happens. Well, a confirmation window pops up then when you click okay it disappears and nothing else happens and nothing seems to have changed. If I drill into the Vista > USB folders and right click on the sis163u.inf file to install it, I get the error message Victor gets: “The ING file you selected does not support this method of installation” That’s after the TrendNet device has been deleted from the Device Manager or when it is there. When it is there, if I use the Update Driver… option in the Device Manager and browse to the inf file in the Vista > USB folder, Windows very annoyingly tells me that it thinks it already has a better driver installed and won’t let me update it!! Please help!

Okay, I finally just decided to try double-clicking on “DPInst.exe” even though I got the impression from the above commentary that that was not the correct way to install the driver. When I clicked on it, it popped up a driver installation utility. It ran. Everything installed great. I plugged in my adapter, it was recognized and installed. Everything works beautifully.

Thanks so much, Justinas, for pointing me to the SiS driver! I never would have figured that out in a million years.

Hope this is helpful to some one

Have an HP desktop with vista 32 bit. Connected the adapter to the usb drive and connected the computer to the network physically to the router so windows update could connect to Microsoft’s site,

Windows identified the unit as a ZyDAS ZD1211 802.11 b+g wireless LAN.

Works fine and using currently to watch netflix with no jitter
